A Southern Maker Uses Furniture to Tell a Story

As you know, I just moved into my new home about three weeks ago! We’re still finishing up some of the renovations such as tile and trim work. Because we’re also in the middle of decorating, I’m not quite ready to share a home tour just yet but you’ll see small snippets in the weeks to come, starting with my home office!

Somehow I managed to get the best room in the house for my studio because it has two walls fully lined with windows! So when I was trying to think of how to furnish the space I knew that I wanted to bring in some texture and find pieces that are functional for myself and my team. I spent a lot of time on Pinterest and pulled inspiration from The Cloister at Sea Island. I kept coming back to Pecky Cypress. I loved the look of the wood and how it adds a touch of old world charm. The texture of the wood offsets the Simply White by Benjamin Moore white walls and the white-washed antique doors leading to the bright and airy space. Luckily I heard about Alex Geriner of Doorman Designs through Southern Living and I loved his designs. I scoured his site for a possible table to use in my office and I fell in love with his Pecky Cypress Farmhouse Dining Table. He also loves to work with his clients on custom orders and loved the idea of white washing the wood to match the vibe in my office. And boy did he nail it! To say I am in love with the amazing pecky cypress table in my office is an understatement! It is the anchor piece in the room. I use it for meetings, retreats and as a backdrop for my styled shoots.

For all of Alex’s designs he sources the wood used in his pieces from the South; New Orleans and Gulf South. Many of the pieces are made with salvaged wood from flooded buildings after Hurricane Katrina. It’s really the character of the wood found in those older buildings and homes that inspires his work and designs. For my specific table, he salvaged wood from an 1890’s home for the table top and the legs are from an 1890’s Episcopal school in Baton Rouge. (Casey and I got married in an Episcopal Church so the meaning is extra special to us!) Not only is his work stellar, I absolutely love that I know the story behind the piece. It makes it all the more unique. His attention to detail isn’t only evident in his beautiful creations, it is also seen in how he conducts business. My table was delivered on-time and included a hand written note from Alex giving me the history of the table, what a special touch!

I couldn’t wait to share Doorman Designs with you and my favorite new piece of furniture in my home. I know if you visit his site you’ll love all of his pieces too. Best part, you can order online and he ships!
