Mad Apples with Brandy

A Simple (And Boozy) Treat for Your Adult Trick or Treaters

While the high temps and humidity are keeping most people indoors, it’s a wonderful time to start planning your Halloween party. I’ll be sharing four boozy concoctions this week ranging from cocktails to sweet treats that are sure to be crowd pleasers. Just remember that they all contain alcohol so drink responsibly and only serve these fun treats to your fortunate friends that are 21 and up.

These Mad Apples with brandy make the perfect addition to any adult Halloween party. For a spooky look, use black food coloring and find twigs from your yard (that are thoroughly washed of course) for use as the skewer. These Mad Apples are a great twist on the classic candy apples that everyone loves.

Mad Apples (Yields 6)

Ingredients

4 Cups Granulated Sugar
¾ Cups Water
¾ Cups Brandy
1 Cup Light Corn Syrup
6 Granny Smith Apples (unwaxed)
Black or Red Food Coloring

Directions

Grease a sheet of baking paper and place on a tray/baking sheet. Add skewers into the apples and set aside. In a medium pot, combine the sugar, water, liquor, corn syrup and food coloring and stir over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture feels smooth when you rub it between your fingers. When the sugar has dissolved, crank the heat up and wash the sides of the pot down with a pastry brush dipped into clean water to prevent crystals from forming. Allow the candy mixture to boil until it reaches the hard crack stage 310°F.  Carefully dip the apples into the hot candy mixture and place on the baking paper to set and cool for approximately an hour before serving. Bon appetite!
