Best Little Bakery in the South

Back in the Day Bakery is a precious cafe in Savannah, Georgia. It’s right down the street from The Florence, and is a wonderful place to enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastry. Everything is made from scratch and and they focus on seasonal, fresh food! For breakfast they have biscones, muffins, scones and other pastries. It’s hard for me to choose a favorite afternoon treat between all the fun flavors of the cupcakes, brownies, puddings, cookies and pies!

My favorite part of this bakery is that it’s a small family business that strives to be a positive part of the community. The bakery has been recognized both locally and nationally for their incredible desserts and wonderful lunch. The owners, Cheryl and Griff, had dreamed of owning a bakery where everything was made from scratch. They opened on a minimalist budget and through their passion and dedication to their business, they’ve built the “Best Little Bakery in the South.” They certainly make the perfect pair as Cheryl loves baking and Griff is passionate about lunch creations.

They were both nominated by James Beard as Outstanding Bakers and New York Time Best Selling Cookbook Authors. Together they have a New York Times best selling cookbook, Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook, that has a forward by Paula Dean. Not only do they share some of their most popular recipes in this cookbook, but they also reveal their baking techniques and special tips to enhance your presentation of desserts. They’ve received numerous accolades, from the Southern Independent Bookseller’s Alliance best cookbook of 2013, to one of Food & Wine’s Best Cookbooks of 2013. They were featured on the Martha Stewart Show, and have also been featured in the New York Times 36 hours series, Country Living, Southern Living, Redbook, Taste of the South, and even Cooking with Paula Deen.

Needless to say, you have to visit the bakery and see, or rather taste, for yourself! If you’re in Savannah for the weekend, make sure to stop by on a Saturday because they are closed on Sundays and Mondays.
