Cohen’s Retreat

A Unique Shopping Experience in Savannah, GA

If you’re planning a trip to Savannah, then you have to include Cohen’s Retreat on your agenda! Located in midtown Savannah, the grounds of the five acre property are filled with gorgeous oaks draped in Spanish moss, while the different buildings seamlessly blend art, food and the community. The retreat is home to a restaurant, shops, event space and breathtakingly gorgeous grounds. In 1934 the space was originally home to Cohen’s Old Man Retreat, which was Mr. Percy Cohen’s dream—a space for elderly men to reside at the end of their life. The retreat was open for more than 50 years, and then in 2010 Colleen Smith and Karen Langston decided to bring back this Savannah landmark, while transforming it into a unique and innovative design center that is raved about by all who visit.

This space was intentionally created not just for enjoyment, but also to serve as a source of inspiration for others. In an effort to foster creativity and learning, the retreat hosts a broad range of talks and workshops, ranging from cooking classes to leather belt making classes, and more. In addition, they host events and weddings in their three different spaces—the art tank, porch, and library bar. Each space is unique and rich in history, while establishing its own ambience. To complete the retreat’s event space, there are cottages that are available for reservation. The quaint cottages feature all of the amenities of a home, while allowing you to experience the nurturing environment of this historic property.

Cohen’s Retreat is truly a unique shopping experience, featuring two different centers—the Brown Dog Market and Savannah Plush. While Brown Dog market showcases local art, furniture, gourmet foods, and textiles, Savannah Plush focuses more on smaller goods created by local artisans. Brown Dog Market also has showrooms that change seasonally. These markets contain different stalls and are filled to the brim with jewelry, pillows, candles, cowhides, and much more. There truly is something for everyone in the different shops. I highly recommend spending a day at Cohen’s Retreat, and I promise, you won’t run out of things to do!

Visited Cohen’s Retreat for lunch after Lavin Label’s recommendation and we loved it. Fabulous creative design, interesting items in their shops, and delicious dining experience. I had the chicken salad on a French croissant. And if you love fabric, check out Fish Out Of Water Design right around back. Thanks Monica. Lots of fun!
